BEFORE: What do I risk?
Do not turn a Pet unhappy while making you unsurroundable worries.
Take time to answer each of these questions, you will get an idea of what you may expect:
- My family circle (husband, spouse, childs, parents) agrees?
- Will my compagnon be considered as a true family member?
- Will he be well housed, well treated?
- Will children avoid to make him suffering by including him in their games?
- If it is a dog: Do I have time enough to spend 2 hours each day at least with him?
- Can I pay its upkeeping ( vaccines, food, veterinary cares, Civil Liability Insurance ...)?
- Am I able to train him correctly?
- What will I do with him during the holydays, absences?
- Who will take care of him if I am ill, if I die?
- Will I be able to take him along if I leave the country?
If you feel it is too difficult, even if it bothers you a lot,
DO NOT ADOPT!
The good choice
Few Pets, but well cared Pets.
- Above all, for its safety, it must be identified, tattooed:
- You have to know that ess than 0.2 % f not tattooed, unidentifiable dogs, find their owners again after having been lost, all the others (99.8 %) die because unable to live without their owner.
- Male or female?
- The female is less runaway and don't mark her territory, but she regularly have babies if she is not sterilized.
- Short hairs or long hairs?
- Under ours climates, long hair dogs suffer from heat. More, a long hair dog needs more cares (brushings, washing, deparasiting). To Brush on a regulat basis is essential: Crumbs which hang in long hairs induce entanglements which enlarge by itself, instead of reduce. It ends by inducing pains. The concerned fur area must be cut. By brushing immediately (manual remove+brushing) it never happens. It is a constraint however.
- A little dog, or a big dog?
- A big sized dog is more expensive (he eats more) and needs more place. For watching and defense a little dog may give the same services as a big one.
- Baby or adult?
A baby would have to be given to persons able to correctly train him, softly.
- In principle, the older he is, the harder his adaptation is, but all is depending on his temperament:
There are dogs loving changes.
Cats allows sometimes, but they hate that when they don't choose it by themselves.
It is when he is from 2 to 4 months old that we can form... or deform him, after it will be difficult. Thus, a baby must have a lot of contacts with man otherwise he will remain wild all his life long:
- It is between 1 and 3 months old that kitty learns to love, or to flee, men.
- It is between 2 and 4 months old that puppy learns to love, or to flee, men.
- A puppy must learn to be clean (from six months old), to wear acollar, to walk with a leash (from one year old), to obey (from one year old).
- When separate him from his mother?
- A baby must not be separated from his mother before he is three months old because the mother milk is his only shield against diseases.
- What about abandoned?
- All is depending on the length and his age during the abandon period. The shortest it is, the less he will get aftereffects:
- Little young dogs (scrawny, thiny, shy) "which are so pitiful", remain often retarded for life. hey need frequent expensive cures, and are diseases reservoirs..
- Other abandoned ones who don't have these characteristics will be very faithful and very grateful to you.
Where to adopt?
Most of the Pets to adopt are either in the street, feeded by some good-willings, or temporarily sheltered by welcome families.
The Fenua Animalia "welcome structure", because of lack of political will, and money, is spreaded, and more than fragile for our Pets.
However, since 2006, Fenua animalia is the Papeete Town Hall partner for the management of its municipal shelter.
This structure, located at the end of Titioro, shelters some of the wandering dogs catched by Police:
Even if places are numbered, there is to tell that Papeete mayor is still the only one who took measures to try to limit the wandering Pets proliferation in his commune without passing by the systematic euthanasia square.
You wish to adopt a Pet, think about the shelter, we take the time to care & cure them, they are tatooed, sterilized.
List
The only way to see them is by calling our phone coordination at the 726 726
This may appear reluctant, we deplore too, but "World's prettiest girl can give only what she owns".
We thank you for your comprehension, and above all for your love for our survivors.
By adopting here, you save a Pet from death, and take him out of Hell, and he will be grateful to you for ever, but
