There are numerous poison sources and each require a special treatment.
The first work for the veterinarian will be thus to try to identify the toxic, to administer the appropriate treatment.

The most you will facilitate his work, the faster the emergency will be processed, the greater you will increase the survival chances for the victim. But, it is unfortunately exceptionnal to be ear witness of a poisonning.
 

Poisonning can appear by:

• vomitings,
• slaverings,
• diarrheas,
• shivers,
• convulsions,

followed by an exhaustion then, and quickly, the death.

Emergency behaviour

1. It is an Absolute Emergency Case => Protect + Alert + Rescue:
 
a) Protect:

• If you had the chance to see how the pet has been poisonned, remove the poisonning source or block its access. It should not happen that other animals follow the same way, or that any children may put his life at mortal danger.

b) Alert:

• Look quickly if you can identify the poison:
  If you have the chance to have an access to the poison, take a sample along with you, or the tank, or the chemical ingredients : The veterinarian needs to identify it asap.
• Call - in emergency your vet who will give you the best way to behave.

c) Rescue: First aids:

• Never give milk: It may, in some cases, increase the poisonning process.
   
• It is possible to give to drink some water with sugar: It is an immediate energy supply which helps the pet in his struggle against the poison.
   
• If there is a suspicion of poisonning with the Gramoxone (an herbicidal liquefiying lungs), give to eat some Terre de Foulon (otherwise, an other clay) bought in a pharmacy, in suspension in some water, in utmost emergency: This emergency treatment tries to absorb the poison before its assimilation, when it is yet in the stomach (later, it is too late).
   

2. After the emergency:

If you think it is a voluntary poisonning, file a complaint:

If you have an idea of the guilty, inform the Gendarmerie which will open an investigation.
Otherwise complaint against X, but DO IT.

Too many murderers of our four pawed friends remain unpunished, for want of taking the trouble to file a complain.

Some victims fear reprisals, what can do worse these cowards apart from poisonning your pet?
They are cowards and will not attack you or your chidrens directly: This is really far too dangerous for them!

On the other hand, think that while spreading poison in your home or around, furthermore in the form of poisonned food, they could very easily poison any young child who tend to bring anything to their mouth.

Poisonning is a crime, a cruelty act punished by the Code Pénal Français which is applied in Polynesia.

Don't answer that it is useless, that anyone don't care. It is precisely by filing complaints each time happens one of these odious acts, that things will change.

Keep in mind that some have been already sentensed for that in Polynesia.
The more numerous the sentenses will be, the more people will think before to perpetrate these crimes.

If the veterinarian confirm the poisonning, even if the Pet escape death, don't forget to ask him for a certificate that you will bring to the Gendarmerie while lodging your complaint.

Pet Anti-Poison Web Sites

The possible poison list is very long and disparate (plants, alimentary products (for us, like chocolate or sugar), chemical ones, upkeeping, house, mecanical, garden, paints, etc...), and animals species don't answer the same manner to the toxic.

Internet seems to be yet quite poor in Pet Toxicology Dedicated Sites. Poison Search engines, accessible to consummers, are near inexisting in French, and databases rare.
